OUR PEDAGOGY

Understanding comes before progression.

Mauna is a school of movement built on a single idea: the body is not something to force, but something to understand, to inhabit, and to listen to. Through yoga, Pilates, mobility, stretching, and the principles of movement, you learn to feel your body from within and to move with intelligence and ease.

We always start with listening.

Three ways in: Move, Understand, Breathe

Everything we teach grows from three movements, which work together and feed one another.

Move

the body in motion. Yoga, Pilates, stretching and mobility, from restorative and slow to dynamic practices. This is where the practice lives, week after week, in the Mauna Membership.

Understand

the mind that comprehends. The philosophy and history of yoga, and the anatomy behind each movement. Not only to practice, but to understand why. This is the subject of our deepening courses, which open season by season.

Breathe

the breath that settles. Breathwork, pranayama, meditation and deep relaxation: where the body quiets, the mind clears, and you start to listen. You can begin with our course Breath.

Three threads

Precision

Precision is not about doing the posture correctly. It is about paying attention to what is actually happening: where the weight is, where the breath is, what the body is avoiding. A correction is not a judgment. It is an invitation to look more closely.

Philosophy

Philosophy here is a living inquiry, not a module. We read the texts, we ask what they mean, and we ask whether they are true. If a text does not change how you practice, you have not understood it yet.

Presence

Presence means moving at the speed of attention, not the speed of the sequence. The posture can wait. The breath cannot.

How this shows up in practice

  • Learning to sense before trying to change: the breath, the nervous system, the body’s own signals.
  • Movement explained through anatomy and biomechanics, so you understand why as well as how.
  • Practices for beginners, experienced practitioners and teachers alike.
  • Short, accessible practices you can bring into ordinary life.

Who it is for

If you have been practicing for years and feel something has gone flat, you are welcome here. If you are new and curious and a little unsure, you are welcome here. If you want to understand what you are doing instead of just performing it, you are in the right place.
