Make things easier

by Maray Sutti Picq

There is a moment in practice when we realize something surprising. The posture was never only difficult because of the posture itself. Sometimes it was difficult because of everything we were adding around it. The anticipation, The fear of failure, The unnecessary force, The constant internal commentary, The idea that we should already be somewhere else.

And slowly, through practice, we begin to notice that effort and tension are not always the same thing. A posture may still require effort. Life may still require effort.

But tension is often the layer we unconsciously add on top.

The body contracts before movement even begins.
The jaw tightens.
The breath becomes shallow.

The mind starts preparing for discomfort before discomfort is even here. And this is not only something we see in yoga. We see it everywhere.

In the way we speak to ourselves.
In the way we move through uncertainty.
In the way we try to control outcomes, relationships, emotions, or time itself.

We spend so much energy trying to make life easier that sometimes we create even more friction inside ourselves.

Practice begins to change this very quietly.

Not by removing difficulty.
Not by making us invulnerable.
Not by teaching us how to avoid discomfort.

But by helping us recognize what is unnecessary.

The extra gripping.
The extra resistance.
The extra layer of struggle.

And when that layer softens, something unexpected appears:

space.

The same posture.
The same breath.
The same life.

But experienced differently.

There is more listening.
More responsiveness.
More presence.

In yoga, we often speak about alignment

as something physical.

But perhaps there is also another kind of alignment

an inner alignment where the body, the breath, and the mind stop pulling in opposite directions.

Where we stop fighting the moment we are already inside of.

Maybe wisdom is not about making everything easier.

Maybe it is about learning how to stop creating unnecessary suffering inside what is already here.
